Volnutt vs. Quote (Mega Man Legends vs. Cave Story)
“Never mind searching for who you are. Search for the person you aspire to be.” - Robert Brault
Volnutt, Mega Man Legends’ Digger with a heart of gold.
Quote, Cave Story’s soldier from the surface.
These two robots were found one day with amnesia, bereft of their purpose, before being taken in and helping out others along their quests across various caves, collecting vast arsenals on their way, along with finding their true purpose and fulfilling it - with a few friends along the way! But, when these two come to blows, will Quote be the one to dig Volnutt a second grave, or will Volnutt pull the trigger first? Let’s find out in this DEATH BATTLE!
Before We Start…
Both Volnutt and Quote will be given all canon materials. This means both Legends games, the Misadventures of Tron Bonne and the mobile game 5 Islands Adventures will be included, as well as Cave Story, all its rereleases, and Cave Story’s Secret Santa. In addition, both will be given all their weapons. While this isn’t possible in game for either, it’s more comprehensive that way and is fairer to both, plus it’d be headcanon-y to assume which weapons they kept.
As for the images, Yuix did the edits for Volnutt and Quote’s backgrounds. In addition, Olegg did the edit for the winner graphic, and the trailer for the next time was done by Ninja. Thank you to all of you, you’re the best.
Background
Volnutt
"I analyze every possibility, and I never give up. That’s the way I live my life as a digger!”
In a long, distant future from every other entry in the Robot Timeline, the whole planet was flooded due to seemingly unknown circumstances (totally not because of some moon-sized space station an evil scientist -that lived through a computer virus- decided to crash onto the Earth). And in this world, a civilization of the original humans and robots now called "the Ancients" had managed to successfully coexist peacefully to the point where they built many technological wonders all over the world, create a new species of "humans" called the Carbons, and even build a prosperous world that hails in outer space called "Elysium". The Master System, a system meant for the Ancients to watch over Terra (Earth) and the Carbons, was the system that governed Elysium and everywhere within the influence of the Ancients.
One of these Ancients and a unit of this Master System was a blue robot once called Mega Man Trigger. He was a 1st Class Purifier Unit, a kind of police officer for the Master System meant to hunt Aberrant Units that would rebel against the Master System. This elite unit would also be the only close friend of the Master, the last of the original humans and founder of the Master System. Although it is unknown for how long Trigger had known the Master, one thing was for sure: the two were close all because of the latter's loneliness. And one day, he fatefully asks Trigger to take him to Terra to see his own creations thrive in person. In his final moments in Terra, the Master gives Trigger his final task: destroy the Master System. After his death and before undertaking his final mission, Trigger would save his own memory data and the Master's genetic code into a little monkey called Data - all so that they couldn't be tampered with or even be found by Sera.
With Trigger headed back to Elysium, he set out to destroy the Master System - deleting the genetic code of all the original humans in Elysium's Library. However, he would unsurprisingly come across obstacles; in particular, 2 units of the Master System known as Mother Units opposed him. They were both called Yuna and Sera. Both were initially against Trigger, seeing him as someone who'd become an Aberrant. Yuna would promptly become a neutral party as she quickly caught on to what Trigger's situation was. But Sera would not desist, and soon after, the battle would be taken to Terra once again where Trigger and Sera fought to a stalemate: a stalemate that had left the 2 belligerents without energy and Trigger with most of his body destroyed. Yuna would promptly seal both in stasis, in addition to rebooting Trigger's parameters by turning him into a baby.
At least 51 years later, the famous renowned digger Barrel Caskett would journey into Nino Island's ruins without the permission of the Guildmaster of that island. And at the entrance of this island a large diamond was found. Upon touching this diamond, Barrel found the sealed Mega Man Trigger turned into a baby and Data. Given he could not give away that he entered the ruins illegally, he returned back to his Flutter to raise him alongside his granddaughter, Roll Caskett. Upon the request of Roll, Barrel renamed Trigger as MegaMan/Rock Volnutt. And from this day on, Volnutt would grow up to become a digger for the Caskett family in search for many different treasures to supply his family, in addition to finding new friends and foes. For the world of Terra... Was a vast world with more than meets the eye.
Quote
“You feel a black wind blow through you.”
Let us tell you a story about a boy who once awakens in a small cave. The boy doesn’t know his name, doesn’t know his past nor does he know his purpose. But with some sense of exploration within himself he finds himself a small pistol and gets out to see what there is beyond a small door he was shut in. When he gets out, the first thing he encounters is a small village with inhabitants that call themselves Mimiga. These Mimiga are small and innocent creatures who wish no harm, but a bit over 10 years ago were facing a war against the human race. Turns out the boy was actually a robot, and those similar to him were in that war against Mimigas. Despite being harmless creatures once they consume Red Flowers, these Mimigas turn into uncontrollable monsters destroying everything on their path at the cost of losing their sanity. Still there are only two of his kind (himself included) left, so with the floating island that has nothing but monsters all over its insides, it was a great palace to be visited by a group of scientists. Unfortunately one of the scientists had far less kind motives, and instead decides to collect all Mimigas and Red Flowers across the floating island to make himself a new army and conquer the world. All with the help of his crown and servants he gained upon wearing it, Misery and Balrog. As soon as The Boy finds scientist’s daughter Sue Sakamoto turned into a Mimiga, he tasks himself with rescuing her older brother, Kazuma Sakamoto, and is then tasked to destroy The Red Flowers. Despite The Boy’s attempts, during which he met with another robot of his kind, Curly Brace, the scientist who calls himself The Doctor, was able to get everything he needed to conquer the world, and The Boy along with Curly were sent into Labyrinth.
But The Boy was nothing but persistent, as he was able to find himself an exit and even almost destroy the core which keeps the island floating in the first place. This however came at a price, as Curly had to sacrifice her own life to keep him alive. After going back to Mimiga Village, The Boy is now left with only a few choices, one of these choices is to fly away with Kazuma on a dragon, letting The Doctor to prepare his Mimiga army and take over the world, after seeing so many nearby himself die…a bit dark and the worst choice to do, but it was not the only one. The boy could also choose to go upwards directly to The Doctor, face against both Misery, The Doctor and The Core. With some help from a few who left alive, that being Sue, her mother Momorin, and a cowardly mechanic Itoh who also was turned into a Mimiga, The Boy was able to reach directly to the surface and prevent The Doctor from achieving his world domination…but even with all of that there is one more way, harder to achieve but nevertheless, the best one.
If The Boy skips one of the professors he can encounter in the labyrinth and instead will focus on saving Curly Brace, a girl who almost sacrificed her life to save his, and afterwards will get to regain Curly’s memories back, The Boy would also come to realization. The Boy’s name…was Quote, he and Curly were soldiers robots sent to this floating island and had but one purpose - destroy the Demon Crown which is what was corrupting everyone who was wearing it, as well as what was the reason for the original war to happen in the first place. At first, Quote and Curly succeeded at defeating the previous crown wearer, but also left heavily injured, and incapacitated afterwards for 10 years, left in ruins of the war that caused Mimigas to go extinct and humans in it to die, inside the island. Once Curly and Quote get their memories back, their bond becomes as solid as iron, and after going through the same route of defeating Misery, The Doctor and The Core, Quote goes further. Now afterwards Quote and Curly go into depths of the islands, not only destroying the crown, its wearer and the core, but also killing the one who caused it all - Ballos. A sorcerer who was imprisoned by a jealous king, causing only for Ballos to rampage and leave the kingdom in ruins as well. Now after killing Ballos, Quote and Curly not only prevented anyone from misusing Demon Crown, but also lifted the curse Misery and Balrog were bound to, freeing them from serving to anyone who may wear it later on. With all of these achievements, Quote and Curly have fulfilled their main purpose, preventing any more killings that would've been done had the Demon Crown stayed intact. Now Quote and Curly can go anywhere they like, and live their life peacefully, as the Demon Crown and its creator are now nothing but a story, a Cave Story.
Experience & Skill
Volnutt
Most of Mega Man’s experience as Mega Man Trigger is unknown, but given he was a Purifier Unit of the First Class it’s reasonable to say he has an extensive amount of good quality combat experience. This is made clear when even Mega Man Juno, another Master System unit that kept his extensive experience, even admitted he didn’t stand a chance against even an amnesiac Volnutt. And the fact that he could, for a while, hold his own against 2 Mother System units is another testament to how tenacious Trigger was.
But even as Volnutt, he has a lot of stuff going for him as someone who has been a Digger for half of his new life: he has defeated beings who have combat experience of up to 16 years like Klaymoor and Bola. He has fought enemies in different kinds of volatile terrains like in blizzards, volcanoes and underwater places, avoiding all kinds of traps including being jumped by enemies that appear from the ground and suck his life energy. He has singlehandedly repelled armies that would invade islands, and has even broken into enemy territory to deal with ambushes of enemies nonstop to rescue a kidnapped girl. Volnutt has even defended Kattelox Island and established peace there by dealing with internal and external threats to its peace. He has consistently dealt with enemies with better mobility than him like Geetz and Focke-Wullf, even in environments with alternating gravity. And even can survive for 3 days in digging trips without any breaks! As can be seen, Volnutt has dealt with a wide variety of enemies, terrains and situations!
His mastery of weapons is also nothing to scoff at: he can effectively and in an organised fashion cover floors and surfaces with mines and other projectiles. He is capable of skilfully using swords to cut apart entire ships, and even plant bombs on enemies before realising it happened. He can even danmaku enemies with countless projectiles! All this while not having used these weapons ever in his life before that! Needless to say, Volnutt is by no means a pushover.
Quote
When it comes to combat Quote is nothing but an expert at it. Even ignoring all what he may have done before he and Curly got amnesia (mostly because we don’t really have visuals to see what happened but still), he still practically masters all weapons he gets his hands on immediately. The most notable example would be from his first weapon - Polar Star/Spur, which while he stole it, its gunsmith noticed his fair share of skill at it, to the point that he willingly upgraded it for him. But skills of shooting alone isn’t enough, Cave Story is known to be a really challenging game, very often besides encountering various species in the floating island, majority of bosses can kill Quote in a matter of few hits, yet Quote manages to avoid being hit most of the time against all of them. Whether it be Mimigas infected by Red Flowers, a witch Misery who protects herself with dark rings while shooting various projectiles, The Doctor who fused himself with Core, infected both Misery and Sue forcing Quote to fight literally 3 opponents at the same time (while summoning dozens of monsters against him as well).
However, all of that pales in comparison to what Quote (with a small help from Curly) had to face later in the true (or at least, “the best”) ending. Not only Quote had to properly use his Booster to go through variety of red spikes all of which can kill him in a single touch, not only all of his weapons were reduced to lvl 1 forcing him to evolve necessary ones from the start, but later on, he had to simultaneously fight against army of flying angels AND dodge falling blocks because during that moment the island was falling, and then he had to fight against gigantic stationary robot, while dodging wheels that ride across the room and fighting against same flying angels at the same time, and right after that, fighting Balos himself who also uses a severe amount of projectiles, has FOUR phases, three of which Quote had to specifically aim for his eyeballs, all while flying devils are flying above and can also harm Quote if he gets too high, and floor eventually being filled with spikes, harming Quote if he gets too low. Oh, have we mentioned that if you are playing on Hard Mode Quote has to do all of that, literally everything mentioned in this section, without being hit ever at all? Or that for even better achievement/ending so to speak, you need to do all of that in under 5 minutes? No? Well now you are sure to know. Man these robots with guns have some crazy skills.

Special Weapons
On Volnutt's right arm, a series of special weapons can be installed onto him. All these weapons were developed by Roll Caskett with parts found by Volnutt in his countless digger adventures, with the option to upgrade them too. However, Volnutt can only equip one special item at a time and if he wants to switch to another special weapon he needs to talk to Roll to change them. Weirdly, he can unequip the special weapons for his Lifter - an ability that allows him to pick up and throw objects. In any case, all of the special weapons are as follows:
Active Buster
This is a weapon that fires homing missiles that track the nearest enemies at fast firing rates with unlimited ammo. The missiles when they hit something cause a large explosion that damages other surrounding enemies. It is one of the strongest weapons in Legends 1, but Volnutt cannot move while firing this weapon. This was built with only 1 item - the Guidance Unit.
Aqua Blaster
This is more of an utility than a weapon. It releases water to extinguish small to medium sized flames. As an utility weapon, it does no damage to enemies and cannot extinguish large flames.
Blade Arm
It is an energy beam sabre weapon that allows Volnutt to engage in close-range combat. Depending on the game, the functionality changes slightly. In Legends 1, the blade is capable of doing 1 slash that sends out a sword beam. In 5 Islands Great Adventure!, the range of the beam saber increases but now he can do 2 slashes instead of 1. And in Legends 2, the range increases further, the weapon energy for it is infinite and now Volnutt can do a 3 slash combo (as seen below).
To create this weapon, the items Pen Light and Zetsabre were needed in Legends 1, a different Zetsabre and Beam Blade Notes were needed in Legends 2, and the Legendary Pika Pika Staff and the Beam Sword Memo were required in 5 Islands Great Adventure!.
Buster Cannon
This weapon is one with a lot of firepower and very long range, making it one of the stronger weapons of Legends 2. Unfortunately, this is one of those weapons that Volnutt can't use while moving. To create this weapon, Roll needed a Thick Pipe and Artillery Notes.
Crusher
This is a powerful electric grenade that Volnutt can throw at his opponents to either stun them or terribly damage them. He can only throw one grenade at a time until the electric sparks dissipate. This weapon can only be obtained if Volnutt becomes a bad boy as the parts needed this time were a Taser and a Soft Ball.
Drill Arm
This weapon can be used as a short-range melee weapon and for utility. The Drill Arm is one of the few weapons in Legends 1, 2 and 5 Islands Great Adventures! to be capable of busting through walls. He cannot move while using it. To create this weapon, a Blunted Drill was only needed in Legends 1; but in Legends 2, a Broken Drill and Heavy Duty Gear were needed to make it.
Grand Grenade
This is a stronger variation of the Grenade Arm, where it throws a stronger grenade with greater area of effect. In-game, it is one of the strongest special weapons, with the grenade being strong enough to break through thick cracked walls. The Bomb Schematics were needed to build this weapon.
Grenade Arm
This is a weapon that allows Volnutt to chuck grenades that bounce and detonate either after awhile or upon contact with an enemy. This is another weapon Volnutt can use while running and strafing. A mere Grenade Kit was needed to create this weapon.
Ground Crawler
This is a weapon that shoots out bombs that automatically rolls on the ground towards the nearest enemy and detonates upon impact. It has decent enough reach to be able to crawl towards enemies tens of meters away from Volnutt (see GIF above). There is virtually no difference between its depictions across all the games it appears in. Roll used a Bowling Ball and a Rusted Mine to create this weapon for Volnutt.
Homing Missile
This weapon is similar to the Active Buster from Legends 1 in that it fires homing missiles towards enemies. However, the biggest differences are that this has a lower firing rate but better enemy tracking abilities. Roll used a Bottle Rocket and some Radar Notes to build this weapon.
Hunter Seeker
This is a weapon that launches drones that can lock onto nearby targets and fire laser shots at them. After a while, they can even detonate to create an explosion that damages any other nearby enemies. He can summon at least 2 of them at a time, and he can use them as sentry distractions and multiple crossfires. A Sensor and Autofire Notes were all that was needed to create this weapon.
Hyper Shell
A much stronger version of the Buster Cannon, except instead of using a standard energy shot, it fires a missile that homes in and causes a wide array of explosions in the area. It also has absurd range as seen in the GIF above. Roll used the Rusty Bazooka and Firecracker to develop this weapon.
Machine Buster
It is a weapon that functions as a machine gun that can be used while running and strafing. The firing rate is equal to that of the Mega Buster when its 'Rapid' parameter is maxed out. However, the weapon is noted to be weak by Roll, further proven by implementing Buster upgrades to the Mega Buster's 'Attack' parameter which renders the special weapon even more useless. This weapon was made with the Blumebear Parts.
Machine Gun Arm
This is a weapon similar to the Machine Buster. While it is stronger, Volnutt needs to constantly reload the ammunition by letting it cool down, giving it a worse fuel economy than its Legends 1 counterpart. Roll used a Long Barrel and a Broken Model Gun to make this weapon.
Powered Buster
This is a weapon with great firepower, range and area of effect - with it also being capable of effortlessly busting thick walls. However, its firing rate is low and the projectiles fly at relatively slow speeds. Due to how powerful it is, it even sends Volnutt back a bit and he can't run or strafe while firing the weapon. A mere Cannon Kit was used to make this weapon.
Reflector Arm
This is a weapon that fires multiple explosive spheres. These spheres have the special property of bouncing on different surfaces, making them useful in indoor combat. What helps make this useful for indoors combat is also the fact Volnutt can use this while running and strafing. Roll used a Bomb Schematic and a Superball to make this weapon.
Shield Arm
It is a weapon that allows Volnutt to protect himself from enemy attacks. Depending on the game, this weapon operates a certain way. For example, in Legends 1 it is but a mere shield that Volnutt deploys in front of him to block even laser attacks -though it cannot block explosions-. This variant can also harm enemies if deployed on them. In Legends 2, the weapon deploys a forcefield around Volnutt, absorbs any incoming attacks and reflects the attack back when a certain threshold is met in the form of a shockwave. Just like the first iteration, however, it cannot block stronger attacks like explosions.
To create this weapon, Volnutt needed to collect a Mystic Orb and a Marlwolf Shell in Mega Man Legends 1; while in Legends 2, he needed to collect a Shield Generator and Shielding Notes.
Shining Laser
A high-power laser weapon that can go straight through enemies. It is commonly considered the strongest weapon in the game due to its constant firing rate, infinite ammo and fire power. Due to its firing rate, it can not only deal constant damage at a target but it can also mow through mobs of smaller enemies with 1 shot. He unfortunately cannot move while using the Shining Laser. In Legends 2, the range of the Shining Laser is increased significantly.
To create this weapon, the items Prism Crystal, the X-Buster and Weapons Plans were needed in Legends 1, and in both Legends 2 and 5 Islands Great Adventure!, the Green Eye and Laser Manual were needed.
Splash Mine
This is a weapon that allows Volnutt to throw 4 landmines at once for enemies to step on them and blow themselves up. Although this is an effective way to deal with enemies, he must be careful not to step on them himself or else he will blow himself up (as shown in the GIF). A mere Mine Parts Kit was used to make this weapon.
Spread Buster
This is a weapon that fires out a large burst of grenades at once covering a lot of area and from a far distance too. In Legends 1, the burst spreads horizontally making it perfect for dealing with waves of enemies point blank. The biggest drawbacks to this version are that you cannot move while firing it and it consumes a lot of weapon energy. In Legends 2 however, the shots are not explosive, it can be used while moving and they have a faster firing rate.
To create this weapon, an Ancient Book, an Old Launcher and an Arm Support were used in Legends 1; while in Legends 2, a Sower and Spreadfire Notes were used to make it.
Vacuum Arm
This is another weapon that is more of an utility than an actual offensive weapon. All it does is suck up small Refractors, Health and Weapon energy that are nearby. This makes it a useful tool for farming Refractors in-game.
To create this weapon, a Broken Motor, a Broken Propeller and a Broken Cleaner were used in Legends 1; while in Legends 2, another Broken Motor and a Broken Vacuum were used to make this weapon.
Items
Throughout Volnutt's adventures, Volnutt can collect a wide variety of items that he can use to give himself a leg-up against enemies and bosses alike. Below is a list of items that he has access to (at least those that would be relevant in a VS debate):
Item Name | Effects |
Flame Barrier | Protects Volnutt from all fire attacks and immediately puts them out after no longer being in contact with the fire source. |
Light Barrier | Protects Volnutt from all electric attacks and nullifies all paralysis/numbness special effects. |
Rebreather | Allows Volnutt to breathe underwater. |
Energy Canteen Mini | Restores 25% of max life. |

Support Robots
Data
Data is Volnutt's support monkey that he created during his days as the Purifier Unit Mega Man Trigger. His role in-game is that he appears to give Mega Man not only advice but to also do things like manage game data (save, load and delete), and even recharge Volnutt of his health and weapon energies an unlimited amount of times. In-story, the former game mechanic is somewhat implemented canonically in that Trigger saved his memories into Data and those memories were used to restore Volnutt after he was almost killed by Geetz. This is not the only instance, as Data was also capable of deleting not only Mega Man Juno's original program data but also his backup one along with passing his authority over Kattelox to Volnutt. Curiously, only Volnutt is capable of understanding what Data says and nobody else can.
Vehicles
Support Car
This is a car that Roll Caskett built after she was given the remains of a rundown dysfunctional car by a couple native to Kattelox Island for completing a favor with Volnutt's help. With the Walkie Talkie, Volnutt can call Roll to come over to his location as long as it's not inside of a dungeon or somewhere completely remote. Inside of this car is a workshop where Roll can change his special weapon and even develop new ones from any spare parts he's got. Unsurprisingly, he can also use this car to travel to different places.
Flutter
This is a small airship that he and Roll would use on their many adventures across the planet to different islands. This originally belonged to their grandfather Barrel Caskett, but after he got better vehicles, Roll took ownership of the Flutter along with Volnutt and constantly maintained it. The Flutter has a function called "Charge Drive" allowing it to traverse hundreds of miles in mere moments. Although when used, it has a chance of destroying the Refractor it uses.
This vehicle can be seen as the house of Volnutt and Roll as it contains multiple rooms like a living room, a kitchen, a restroom, their bedrooms, a lab, a hanger, etc. At the top are the main decks where the Flutter is piloted from and where one can fight as a turret on top of the terrace.
Eden
After obtaining authority over Kattelox Island's systems and protocols following Mega Man Juno's death, Volnutt can call upon this flying space fortress over to Terra to call upon an army of 10,000 workers. Given the implications of the ending, the workers would be relative to Volnutt and above Juno who isn't even a combat robot to begin with. Initially, Mega Man Juno was gonna have these workers enact the Carbon Reinitialization Program in Kattelox Island, killing all Carbons in the island (including Carbons like the Bonne siblings) due to being "overpopulated", but they were withdrawn upon his defeat.
However, given this is tied to his authority over a mere specific island, Volnutt can only call upon it while he is in Kattelox Island. Despite this limitation, this is definitely a noteworthy vehicle that Volnutt logically has access to.
Quote
Polar Star/The Spur
This is Quote’s first acquired gun in the game (at first named Polar Star), it is nothing particularly special at first, given it is incomplete, however Quote still had enough skill to shoot at enemies with it. Originally it was shooting projectiles, just simple like that, the further Quote was upgrading it, the bigger projectiles it shot.
However once Quote got back to its original gunsmith and got an upgrade, it became Quote’s ultimate weapon, literally, it is even called like that by some of the inhabitants of floating island. And it is like that for a reason, you see before actually becoming Spur, Polar Star along with all of the weapons that will be mentioned below, have a weakness of leveling down whenever Quote takes damage, but Spur is designed differently. It doesn’t upgrade to higher levels, instead Quote charges it. Without the charge its shots are identical to Polar Star at its peak, but with the charge however, Quote shoots laser beams, and the further he charges Spur, the bigger and stronger Spur’s laser becomes, to the point of being one of the strongest damage dealers in the game, and the one you’ll see majority of the Cave Story players prioritize (especially given that in the route for The Best Ending, other weapons are being leveled down to the first level twice, while Spur, as mentioned above ignores that rule).
Missile Launcher
This is Quote’s second weapon, as the name implies, it launches missiles. At first level it shoots a pretty small missile, at second level it shoots a bigger and stronger missile, but at third level, it shoots three same small missiles as one shot, which technically makes it stronger than lvl 2 missile.
Later in the story after defeating Balrog for like, fourth time, his Missile Launcher is upgraded to Super Missile Launcher (which you see in image above), aside from shooting orange missiles instead of white now, it acts pretty similarly, just with bigger damage. Though its damage is pretty big, it is worth saying that it is the only weapon that has an actual limited ammunition, and at best Quote can shoot it only 54 times. Not big but good enough to kick your butt.
Bubbline
Personally my favorite weapon (totally unbiased Oleggator opinion), Spur aside…what does it do? Well, it shoots bubbles! Yeah…bubbles, just one bubble at a time, but worry do not, unlike with the certain worm in a suit its potential lies in its later levels, you see at level 2 it starts shooting Bubbles a lot more frequently, as if it is not a water weapon but a flamethrower of sorts, this amount of bubbles deal a very frequent amount of damage, but wait, there is MORE!
At level 3, it still shoots bubbles frequently, except now they all surround Quote, protecting him from anyone who dares to get close to him, and if Quote is shooting too many bubbles, the bubbles that remain floating will start shooting small projectiles towards the direction Quote points at. And once Quote stops shooting bubbles, all of the bubbles will turn into these small projectiles making it a big rain of bubbles charging towards you, a very strong move that often is guaranteed to hit the target. Bubbline’s main downside is that Quote can’t shoot it constantly, it also has ammunition, allowing Quote only to shoot 100 bubbles, however unlike with Missile Launcher, once Quote stops shooting it quickly recharges these 100 bubbles back by itself.
Fireball
Now that is a lot simpler to explain. You know the fire flower from Mario? Quote’s Fireball is basically that - bouncing fireballs that usually are helpful in hitting ground targets, the further Quote upgrades it, the stronger (and presumably hotter given it turns from red/orange to blue/white fire) fireball becomes.
Machine Gun
When playing through Cave Story, Curly can suggest Quote to exchange Polar Star for her Machine Gun. Now objectively it may not be worth it in the long run because then you might won’t be able to upgrade your Polar Star into Spur, buuuut considering we are doing a composite here, we are accounting it as well, especially given that it is also a pretty cool gun. You see, it’s kind of like a Polar Star but a minigun, like, literally, it shoots pretty much the same projectiles as Polar Star but a lot more rapidly as if it is a minigun.
Even the level process is identical here as with further level it shoots bigger and stronger projectiles, most notably at level 3 it shoots projectiles so big that Quote can literally use the gun as if it is a jetpack, by going up with just raw force this machine gun gives away. The downside here is similar to Bubbline, only 100 ammo but similarly can recharge once Quote stops shooting.
Snake
Quote can also trade his Polar Star and Fireball to merge it into Snake. As it is implied by being a merge of Polar Star and Fireball, Snake is sort of a mix of both, at first level it shoots rotating squares, at second it shoots red fireballs in a straight wave motion and at third level it shoots blue fireballs in a straight wave motion. And because of its motion it is called “Snake” given that the projectiles in question move like one (especially if you are familiar with classic nokia snake games…), on top of all that this is the only gun in game that can move through walls, potentially nullifying any barriers/defences that opponent may have.
King’s Blade
King is one of the Mimigas who is the leader of Mimiga Village with a population of…6 Mimigas. Still despite the population that small it was all King had left to protect and despite dying in a battle against Misery, he left his blade to Quote so the latter could avenge him. At first it is rather an average blade that Quote can constantly throw at his foes, dealing pretty strong damage, at second level it becomes bigger and stronger but with shorter range, but at third level it becomes very badass and useful. It is for a reason that you need only one hit to throw Quote off from third level to make it fair, as at that rate, Quote literally summons King’s spirit, who not only just swings several times over until reaching the enemy, once he reaches and swings it, several swings around the enemy also appear, making him land his blows several times over. Interestingly enough, Quote has shown to fight a being who is specifically stated to be a ghost, so it’s somewhat consistent.
Nemesis
Quote can also trade his Blade for this weapon called after the Greek Goddess Nemesis - an agent of the heavens who enacted retribution against the arrogant. Perhaps that is why this weapon is actually an inverse of all the other aforementioned guns. You see it is at its strongest at first level, shooting fast, strong and long lighting bolts, but at second level bolts become weaker and at third level it shoots nothing but slow and weak rubber ducks.
Whimsical Star
After Quote receives The Spur and goes to another gunsmith that at first was suggesting to merge Fireball and Polar Star, instead Quote receives a Whimsical Star, which are three star shaped objects that fly around Quote, protecting him, practically a small accessory to his other weaponry, but still bonus as a secondary ally for Quote in combat, just like Snake they can also go through objects and walls. Practically they are helpful in doing chip damage if Quote is way too focused on dodging other attacks.
290 Counter
For all inner speedrunners out there Quote also has this counter equipped with himself. It is practically merely a timer when Quote is traversing through the final location and defeats Ballos. Daring Cave Story players to complete all of those hard core challenges that were mentioned in the Skill section in a time frame of 6 minutes.
Arms Barrier
The biggest weakness in Quote’s arsenal is that whenever he takes the damage, his weapons and their levels drop after a certain amount of it. Arms Barrier halves the amount of EXP that Quote loses for his weapons whenever he takes non-lethal damage.
Booster v2.0
When Professor Booster is about to die, he gives Quote Booster v0.8, which is basically a small jetpack that lets Quote fly a bit in midair. And then it recharges once Quote lands on the ground and jumps again. However, if you do a very precise jump and skip Professor Booster at that point of the story, he actually becomes smart enough to notice a teleporter below him, and survives, later on giving Quote an upgraded Booster v2.0.
Now that Booster is actually much more useful, bigger and cooler, as now this jetpack can let Quote to fly towards any direction he desires midair, whether it be up, down, left or right. Practically also making Quote faster combatant in terms of travel speed. Similarly to v0.8 it has a limited fuel but recharges as soon as Quote lands on the ground but aside from being faster than v0.8 and allowing Quote to fly into any direction besides up, this jetpack also actually has more fuel and can last longer, allowing Quote to fly higher (or further if you decide to fly forward).
Curly’s Air Tank
You see, robots like Quote have also one more weakness, somehow, for some reason, he and anyone of his kind…can’t breathe underwater, despite being a robot…This was pretty problematic for him, as after fighting Core for the first time, he was actually about to die due to suffocation. Until Curly sacrificed herself and gave her Air Tank to Quote. Remember Bubble Shield from Sonic 3? Yeah so Air Tank functions practically just like that, creating a bubble-like forcefield around Quote letting him breathe safely underwater.
Besides that it is also worth mentioning that Curly has been using it against Quote to protect from the missile launcher, taking no damage from missiles because of that, implying that the air tank also automatically protects from missile/rockets targeted at you.
Tow Rope
However, if everything is done correctly and Quote gets this Tow Rope, he can actually still save Curly from her demise! By attaching her to himself and getting through all of the water and curing her from dying to water. And then attaching her to himself again until she gets into the plantation and gets amnesia.
Mushroom Badge
A badge Quote gets from Ma Pignon in response to the amnesia problem…this badge however, does nothing. That’s right you can almost get scammed by a mushroom, unless you fight back against the mushroom…
Ma Pignon
The amnesia in question can actually be cured if you eat this Ma Pignon. These Mushrooms as stated above don’t give in so easily without a fight, so you still gotta try a bit. However once you beat him, he’s yours or anyone else’s to eat, allowing to cure amnesia once consumed.
Iron Bond
This small green iron badge is basically a signature of the bond Quote and Curly developed throughout the story after everything aforementioned Quote has done to save her life and regain all of her memories back. Though it doesn’t directly has a function, as a signature of Curly being the only person Quote can trust (according to literally game’s statement), it is also what requires Quote to get into the final level of Cave Story, where he also meets Curly and together defeat Ballos once and for all. Perhaps thanks to this bond Curly may be able to come and help Quote in a fight once more, but that is merely a hypothesis.
Life Capsules
Scattered across all of Floating Island, these Metroid looking Life Capsules increase Quote’s max HP. The Maximum Quote can get to if he explored literally everything and everywhere is 55. However, in Cave Story 3D Quote can also get more HP by interacting with other NPCs of the game, increasing maximum up to 98. Which is a lot considering usually the maximum damage an opponent can do to Quote is 10 HP.
Life Pot
Gathered from the elderly witch Jenka, this glass jar with a heart on the inside can restore all of Quote’s HP once he consumes it. However Quote can use this jar only once (unless he goes back to Jenka to take himself another one once again).
Jellyfish Juice
By killing the biggest Jelly around, Quote can acquire this Jellyfish Juice. Whenever there is a fireplace around, Quote can basically put out all fire by spilling this juice on it. By doing so Quote was able to get to another side of Bushlands as well as get other materials and Bubbline.
Map System
As soon as Quote gets in the Mimiga Village (which is literally at the beginning of the game) he can get his hands on this map system, it does nothing offensively but it does demonstrate maps of all places Quote goes through, showing all of the structures nearby Quote as well as Quote’s position in the map.
Mimiga Mask
When getting to Sue’s mother - Momorin Sakamoto, Quote needed to get a few of details to build a rocket and get directly to The Doctor, to do so, Quote needed to interact with Mimigas that are in Plantation, but not all Mimigas are on Quote’s side, some are rather afraid of non-mimiga beings, so what is the better way besides disguising himself as one! When wearing this mask Quote starts to look exactly like a Mimiga, the disguise is so believable that none of the Mimigas notice through disguise allowing Quote to get necessary details.
Abilities
Volnutt
Purifier “Carbon” Physiology
Volnutt has a composition that is fairly similar and practically indistinguishable to those of Carbons. Carbons (Decoys in Japanese) are basically organic life forms with flesh that are this series’ “humans” so to speak. These “artificial humans” very closely mimic humans not only in biological functions (i.e, need to eat, sleep, breathe, grow up, reproduce, etc.), but they also possess minds capable of free thought and even souls just like the original humans. The one big difference between the Carbons and the original humans is that the latter are also mechanical in nature. The extent of these mechanical implants varies drastically from a mere limb replacement to full-body overhauls. While Volnutt himself is not confirmed to be a Carbon, he definitely exhibits all these traits given he is explicitly shown to demonstrate basic biological functions, possess a free mind and even fully replace entire limbs and almost entire body for digging and combat. Carbons also consistently demonstrate superhuman abilities: Volnutt himself shows extreme stamina (digging nonstop for 3 days while lost), great strength (lifting crates larger than himself and jumping onto building roofs with them), Joseph Caskett displays ‘near-lightspeed’ disassembly skills, and Tron Bonne endures her mechs’ explosions.
Weapon Mastery
Volnutt has access to a lot of weapons and he can defeat many bosses with them, so it is only natural that he has mastery over a wide variety of weapons. Swords, shields, explosives, busters, drills, lasers, drones, rocket launchers, etc. It is unknown if Volnutt displays mastery from using them once or subconsciously draws muscle memory from his days as Mega Man Trigger, the Purifier Unit. What is certain is that he has displayed mastery of these weapons to the extent at which he can plant bombs without flying enemies realising it before it’s too late mid-fight, can cut up entire battleships like the Gesellshaft with just the shockwaves of his saber, and can even throw explosives and shoot projectiles to the extent it can be safely considered danmaku omnidirectionally (44 projectiles at the same time).
Resistances
Throughout his adventures, Volnutt has had to deal with a wide variety of conditions and other obstacles. Given this, Volnutt has a few noteworthy resistances to certain things that he has encountered in his adventures those being:
- Extreme Heat: Volnutt can walk around in lava which is 1300-1500 degrees Celsius and withstand getting hit with blue flames which burn as hot as 1600 degrees Celsius. With the Flame Barrier, he cannot catch fire (as seen in the GIF above).
- Extreme Colds: Can walk normally inside of a northern pole blizzard which can be as cold as -45 degrees Celsius.
- Electricity: With the Light Barrier, the effects of electricity are nullified.
- Black Holes: Can withstand being inside Sera's black holes.
- Energy Absorption: By changing his special weapon to the Lifter, he can prevent special weapon energy from being depleted.
- Memory Manipulation: By not having his memories in his body but in Data's, he cannot have his memories analysed or tampered with.
- Likely Mind Manipulation: Servitor Units like Gaatz, whose powers are noted to be limited in comparison to a Mother Unit and Purifier Unit, can disobey the Master System's commands (which can do things like not allow Sera to think outside of the System's parameters). Given Volnutt is a unit meant to protect the Master System, he likely had to combat such mental commands when he tried destroying it as Trigger.
- Possibly Hacking & Technology Manipulation: Geetz can assimilate technology as shown with him assimilating the Sulphur-Bottom, but he never tries doing it on Volnutt meaning he possibly can't do it on him. Given he's also a Servitor Unit like Gaatz, who could hack Sera and impair her reaction times, Geetz should be capable of doing the same yet he doesn't try to do it on him.
Quote
Robot Physiology
As one may already suspect, Quote is a robot, and therefore he is a bit different from the average human. For one, as you can tell from his white looking skin, his body is metallic like most of the robots. Additionally Quote also didn’t demonstrate the need for food, sleep or water (despite being capable of doing all 3), which makes sense considering that he was absolutely fine after being basically asleep for 10 years. Though unlike other robots he and Curly are more advanced as they possess pretty much human-like intelligence and appearance, to the point that those who are unfamiliar with robots from the surface, just call him the boy/young man. Unlike any other robot, Quote can also actually drown like a human. All in all it is pretty clear he and Curly were designed to be more like the actual humans with the actual consciousness, as all of the decisions they make, also come from themselves rather than some specific programming, ultimately making them human, but with the robot appearance.
Weapon Mastery
As you could get from everything Quote experienced and from every gun he had on his hands, he is very proficient with them. Despite having amnesia, even the first gun he got in his hand was mastered fairly quickly, as its gunsmith has noted. And every other gun he gets in his hands in the game is also mastered fast by him as well as all of them, as mentioned above receive upgrades the more enemies he beats, proving his skill with every single weapon. This is especially considering he often has to multi-task and switch between his weapons, proving him to be strategic with his weapons when the situation calls for it.
Supernatural Physique
Quote is a pretty short robot (theoretically around a meter tall), however he is a really strong one. Besides being able to take beatings from all sorts of creatures he encounters, as well as having no issues from falling at any height, Quote can prove to have pretty strong strength in his body. Not only he can carry literally all of the aforementioned equipment (and more) at once, not only he can casually carry Curly, another robot, with himself by just attaching her to a rope, but he, along with Curly and Balrog, was able to move away a pretty big rock, to get further into the labyrinth. Even though Balrog was a pretty decent help here, even one third of moving such a big rock is impressive. But most importantly and notably however is Quote’s jumping skills. Despite his not so big height, Quote jumps literally several times above himself and even slightly floats midair, making him still a really impressive jumper despite not being the most mobile metroidvania protagonist.

Scaling
Volnutt
The Bonnes
Over the course of his adventures, Volnutt would always have encounters with the Bonnes, mostly the middle daughter and most popular Legends character, Tron Bonne. With countless inventions made even under serious financial hardships, she -alongside her Servbots and her 2 brothers Teisel and Bon- would prove on numerous occasions to be a massive headache for the blue boy. This family of Pirates even underwent their own little misadventures before ever meeting Mega Man, meaning that the latter can scale to whatever feats the former performed before and after their first meeting including:
- The Gustaff:
- Being capable of destroying entire buildings.
- Being capable of effortlessly lifting boulders its size. (16,713 kg)
- Could take hits from Rafale's Ultimate Cannon which can destroy entire mountains. (78 megatons - 2.985 gigatons of TNT)
- Servbots and the Finkel reacting to a Hanmuru Doll's lasers.
- The Marlwolf could dig a large hole at least 15 meters deep (its height) and this wide.
- Bon Bonne could move in-tandem with Volnutt's Shining Laser.
- The Gustaff could defeat Colossus which is a kaiju-sized Reaverbot (around 60 meters tall) and is powerful enough to take over the whole world.
Reaverbots
Similar to the Bonnes, a type of enemy he'd commonly encounter are Reaverbots. They are mysterious Mechaniloid-like robots inside of the Ruins he'd dig into. They come in a wide variety of forms and they all have their own fair share of feats that can be used for scaling, including:
- Being stronger than civilian Carbons which can move at near-lightspeed. (Relativistic+)
- Freeze entire floors instantly.
- Using magma itself to sustain their health.
- Using Refractors as energy sources, with a Refractor large enough to fit in the Flutter's Engine Room containing a lot of volcanic energy. (At least 10 teratons of TNT)
- Sustaining a hundred mile wide storm for a hundred years. (3.8207 gigatons of TNT)
Ancients (Master System Units)
Given Volnutt ultimately rebels and shuts the Master System down, it is only natural for him to find resistance from units of this System. Through combat, he has proven himself to these units why he is a 1st Class Purifier Unit and why the Master entrusted him with the mission to destroy the System. Given he defeats them, Volnutt can scale to:
- Mega Man Juno who:
- Controlled the Proto-Refractor as a power source, which has an output way above any other energy source. (100-832 teratons of TNT)
- Could cause large explosions in his battle.
- Geetz assimilating the Sulphur-Bottom, which is more powerful than the Flutter:
- The Flutter's Charge Drive destroyed a Refractor of the same size as another one that was used as a fuse for a machine capable of converting volcanic energy -enough to cause a century long ice age- into refractors. (At least 100 teratons of TNT)
- Sera who:
- Can summon meteors from outer space and slam them onto Volnutt.
- Can create black holes and even throw them. (1.281 quettatons of TNT - 0.075 FOE)
- Due to being the Master System and Elysium herself at the end of the game, she'd likely be stabilizing all its systems including the ones maintaining Elysium in orbit. (4.228 teratons of TNT - 30 exatons of TNT)
- Changed the battle stage from the Library to another one with a starry sky in Elysium. (16.44 exaFOE and 50 billions c) (Debatable)
- It is unknown if Sera actually created the space or if she merely teleported them there. [See Before the Verdicts]
Quote
Average Island’s Inhabitants
(Art by watermeloons)
A bit self-explanatory, The Floating Island is filled with a variety of creatures of all sorts and kinds. Quote is able to both survive attacks from pretty much all of these creatures, and kill some with his guns as well, The Spur at its strongest can even kill all of these beings in one shot. So naturally Quote would be able to scale to their feats such as:
- These big blue flying creatures can shake the area around upon falling. As a matter of fact there are plenty of enemies in Cave Story demonstrating such examples of power:
- This metallic contraption with an eye
- Plenty of Cave Story bosses [See Below]
Mimiga
One of the first creatures Quote encounters are Mimiga, they are for the most part are pacific creatures, who intend no harm and therefore don’t fight all too much so Quote surpasses all of the average ones pretty easily. But Mimigas weren’t just rabbit looking innocent creatures (who inspired the design for your favorite Dreemurs…), they also were consuming Red Flowers in a war to fight back against other soldier robots similar to Quote. And throughout Cave Story events, The Doctor had stolen several Mimigas across the island, and fed a good chunk of them with these very same Red Flowers, Quote is able to fight these Mimiga just as well as other enemies so naturally he should scale to their feats, such as:
- One of the mimigas - Igor, powered by a red flower, was able to seemingly shake the area around himself.
- Due to Red Flower Mimigas were able to fight back against robot soldiers similar to Quote in the past and survive in the first place.
- Santa without any power ups was able to knock out a human sized bug creature.
- Santa was also able to decorate any tree within a second.
- King was able to harm Balrog enough to make him go away after being attacked.
- Toroko, powered by a Red Flower is able to throw giant metallic blocks fast and hard enough to break them upon contact.
- Toroko can shake the building while jumping.
Bosses
Also pretty natural, Cave Story has plenty of bosses aside from the ones that will be listed below, and Quote usually has to do all the dirty work when it comes to fighting against beings living on the island. Notably he had to deal with a lot of giant sized creatures/machines and likewise Quote scales to stuff they can do:
- This big metallic machine shakes the area when going out of sand.
- Does it when jumping as well.
- This shadow copy of Balrog was able to shake the area around itself.
- Ma Pignon was able to do so as well.
- And so does Red Ogre.
- Ma Pignon was also able to continuously dodge attacks from Quote’s weaponry, including The Spur which fires lasers (34% - 46% of Speed of Light) [See Before the Verdicts]
- This giant metallic object upon death broke several stone floors
Ballos and his cursed beings
At last and the most important is The Demon Crown, or should we rather say Ballos, and everything that he practically caused with the creation of The Demon Crown. Such as a variety of beings that became corrupted to this Demon Crown alongside The Doctor, beings that are cursed to serve The Demon Crown and its wielder - Witch Misery and Balrog, but most importantly The Core of the island which keeps it floating in the first place. Quote was able to defeat all 5 in a variety of instances, Balrog 4 times, The Doctor 3 times, Misery and The Core 2 times and Ballos 1 time, the latter was killed permanently in their very first fight which also is a final fight Quote has to go through in the game. So naturally Quote should scale to feats by virtue of not only defeating all of the ones that are remotely related to the curse, but also the one who caused the curse in the first place (Ballos). This would include a solid amount of feats such as:
- Balrog breaks into the room, breaking the door and wall around the door while shaking the whole building.
- Balrog falls into a robot so hard he gets stuck into the ground.
- Shakes building/area around himself notably in all of his boss fights.
- Balrog shooting missiles
- Balrog lifting and throwing a giant stone alongside Quote and Curly
- Balrog crushing a LOT of skeletons at once.
- Misery teleporting Balrog despite his supposedly big size and mass.
- Misery summoning several giant pillars to fall into Quote
- The Doctor powered by Red Crystal was able to shake area around himself
- The Core is what is keeping the entire island floating (as with its destruction, the island started to fall, only stops from falling if Ballos is defeated and falls entirely in an ending where Ballos is undefeated) (2.9-8.21-23.22 Teratons of TNT) [See Before the Verdicts]
- While possessed by The Doctor, The Core was amplified due to Red Crystal’s power, meaning Quote upscales by virtue of beating Core’s amplified version
- Ballos causes shockwaves with his stomps
- Ballos causes even stronger shockwaves once turned into a big stone ball
- Ballos can shoot lighting
- Ballos’ “negative power” seems to be partially responsible for Island’s fall.

Despite his tenacity and perseverance in his countless adventures, Volnutt does have a few number of inconveniences: for one thing, all of his weapons need to be swapped out by Roll if he wants to use another one. He cannot equip them all at the same time. A good chunk of the weapons except for the Shining Laser, Active Buster, and Vacuum Arms have finite ammunition and could run out. He cannot equip anymore than 3 parts for his Buster. He, just like all other Mega Men, is a pacifist and doesn't like to fight at all unless totally necessary, and even then he still feels bad for any defeated opponents he didn't want to fight.
Quote
(Ok to give it a credit it isn’t really as bad as I’d thought it’d be - Oleggator)
Likewise Quote isn’t without a fair share of weaknesses, some of which you may have already noticed while reading his arsenal and skills. For one, despite being a robot, Quote cannot breathe underwater, meaning that without the Air Tank, it is possible to kill him via suffocation. For two despite all of his weapons being very powerful at their peak level, as soon as Quote receives any damage, these levels will drop causing all of them (except for Nemesis and The Spur) to be weaker. For three his Booster (either v0.8 or v2.0) can’t let him fly permanently as eventually fuel needs to be refilled on land, as well as weapons like Missile Launcher and Bubbline lack straight up unlimited ammo unlike his other weapons. And least notably but potentially exploitable is his lack of close quarter combat capabilities, King’s Blade and Quote’s appearance in Blade Strangers aside, as more often than not he relies on outgunning his foes.
Before the Verdicts..
Mega Man Legends
THAT CHINESE MEGA MAN LEGENDS PC GAME???
Yes, this is real. There is an officially licensed Mega Man Legends PC game made by Strawberry Software in 1999 called 洛克人DASH拯救地球‧大冒險 (TL: Rockman DASH: Great Adventure to Save the World). What is this game about? Well, it’s an educational game about Volnutt saving the world from the Bonnes’ tomfoolery! Their tomfoolery in question? Setting up bombs across the Earth in different cities after flying from… outer space?????? And Volnutt himself has a damn space station too?????????? And the Bonnes have a space armada???????????? VOLNUTT ALSO POPPING OFF OVER POTENTIALLY HAVING KILLED THE BONNES AS FAR AS HE’S CONCERNED?????????? VOLNUTT BEING AN AURA FARMER WHILE PARODYING ASTRO BOY BY FLYING ACROSS THE PLANET WITH FOOT JET BOOSTERS?????????????????????????????
Yeah… This game is a real doozy. As you can see, there are a lot of extremely weird things going on here. But what does Volnutt get out of this? Well, more abilities like the ability to just fly alone, more feats like being able to fly across the Earth (Mach 7288) and even survive city busting explosions, and more vehicles like a hoverboard, the space shuttle he uses to get to Earth and a space station that can nuke entire space armadas and stations, and fly from Earth to… somewhere close to Mars?????? Yeah… This game is really weird and definitely not canon.
It’s definitely not canon because it’s a key plot point by the end of Legends 2 that Tron Bonne and Roll Caskett are trying to figure out space travel, meaning it doesn’t make sense for neither the Bonnes and Volnutt to have space ships and be on space-faring adventures anytime before Legends 2. Also, the Earth is still the same as the one of today which doesn’t make sense when you consider the Earth was flooded. And also, Volnutt being able to fly wouldn’t make sense with the implications of Mega Man Legends 2’s ending where he can’t leave Elysium and make it back to Earth.
Granted, all of this could take after Legends 2 retroactively speaking, but the fact that we see Volnutt use the Active Buster, something Roll explicitly sold after Mega Man Legends 1, makes this impossible to seriously argue. So for canon sticklers, I would not use anything from this game if I were you. For soft-composite, maybe only things that don’t contradict his canon capabilities - which means only the city explosion feat is applicable here for the reasons above.
Lastly, whatever you do, do not try to download the game for any reason (even for VS research). The game has a virus innately, meaning your computer will get ligma if you try. Besides, all footage available has already been documented quite extensively so there’s no need to download the game.
Are lasers in Mega Man Legends legit?
You can certainly argue it, and it's fairly easy to do. For one, we know that throughout the 3 games that the Shining Laser appears in, it requires one very peculiar part to get it built. This being crystals or lenses. This is very important to note because this implies that the Shining Laser uses optical systems which do things like reflect and refract light, and crystals and lenses do the latter to light in optical systems. Therefore, it can be stood to reason that the light that composes these lasers refract, which is something light does in laser weapons.
The reason why every single laser would scale is because whenever Roll possesses these refractive parts but not the other items which is usually a manual about lasers, she specifically says that in order to use these parts she needs to understand how lasers work. So this implies that one of the fundamental properties of laser weapons in Legends is that they need optical systems meaning they can refract, which is usually a very valid qualification for this kind of stuff. Further support of this is that the Shield Arm, which uses an explicitly stated refractive part (the Mystic Orb), can block out Juno’s lasers.
Lastly, all laser weapons are a part of machinery and technology which use refractors as their power source. The reason why this matter is because it is explicitly stated that refractors provide light, with the Proto-Refractor legit doing just this. This would of course point to the lasers whatever these machines shootout being made of light, which is another qualifier. This last bit is more minor, but lasers damage targets with the high heat they carry, showing more realistic behavior of lasers.
So for all of these reasons, we believe all lasers in Legends are lightspeed.
What did Sera do in her 2nd Phase?
This is something that was talked about in more dedicated circles. It’s the stage changing from the Library to an unknown place inside of the Mother Zone, which in turn is in Elysium. We know Sera is responsible for this change since she does mention that Volnutt will be the one to be imprisoned -just like how she was at the beginning of the game-, but the one thing we do not know for sure is if she created this… space or if she merely teleported them there. I will be talking about those shenanigans, taking a neutral standpoint and merely presenting the arguments at hand as this will definitely be a controversial argument in these immediate circles. Do make your own opinions when it comes to this.
So, here are a few possible points that could be made in favor of creation:
- No guidebook stated she teleported them there.
- The sound effects of the stage change seem to suggest a physical transformation of the Library rather than mere transportation to another space.
- The place is treated as uncharted and completely removed territory even to Volnutt who has another Master System unit (Purifier Unit) and should be familiar with Elysium’s layouts.
- The stage remains fine even after the Master System shuts down, meaning it’s possibly independent from Elysium’s influence.
And some points in favor of the teleportation interpretation:
- No guidebook stated she created the space.
- Yuna in the body of Matilda can enter the space. Yuna is a Mother Unit with only authority over the Earth’s systems.
- The stage is still there after Sera’s defeat, showing possible independence from Sera’s powers.
- Sera’s never shown the power to create dimensions before this, and has shown she can teleport in the first phase of her fight.
- So, yeah. These are some of the points I can think of for both in favor or against creation. I will let you decide which is stronger.
One thing that can be said for sure is that the stars in the sky can be reasonably assumed to be stars due to several reasons: 1) Sera has already shown the capacity to create celestial bodies casually (the black holes); 2) we know an outer space exists in that space due to the mere fact that she can call upon meteors (they’re by definition rocks from outer space that enter our atmosphere and burn); and 3) a similar looking area’s map indicates that the landscape extends far more out than what we see. Not to mention that the space does look like a realistic enough sky. So the stars in the sky being real can be argued.
With all this said, we have decided to lean into the teleportation interpretation for the simple reason of being more conservative and finding the reasoning for this intepretation more compelling, but we can still see the other side of the argument nonetheless.
Are Sera’s black holes legit?
This is definitely arguable, and we are in the camp that thinks this is fine. How so? Well, here are a few things to consider:
- It's called a black hole.
- It looks like one.
- It behaves like one:
- The fact that the surrounding immediate area grows darker suggests that light is being pulled, which black holes do.
- It's inescapable since it's suggested in the first scan that if you're caught up in it, you can't escape.
- Visibly distort space and pull you in.
- It is created by a person capable of manipulating gravity (NOTE: Lesser Reaverbots have been explicitly stated to manipulate gravity in Elysium and Sera has complete authority over it, so there's no reason for her to not be able to).
Something that needs to be considered is that it is actually a fairly consistent thing in the Robot Timeline for black holes created by gravity manipulators to pull in light (see Gravity Well and Squeeze Bomb), which is a massive qualifier for black holes. Remember, that they all have the same ability to manipulate gravity and culminate in black holes. And given that there is no blatant hierarchy when it comes to the skill of gravity manipulation among them (as well as similar technology being used), one could argue that the qualifiers of other black holes created through gravity manipulation should just scale to one another. So with all this, it's fairly reasonable to argue Sera's black holes are legit. How it's calculated is debatable, but it should definitely be treated as real.
Cave Story
Lightning Timing Cave Story?
Let’s elaborate, there are several moments within Cave Story when Quote is capable of dodging what it seems to be like lighting from his enemies. Now there are no direct statements of it being lighting but can we justify it with visuals alone? The answer to which would be Yes but realistically, not for all arguments. The lighting from High Press, which is the boss we fight before Ballos even if it was actual, is frame 1 and charges before being shot, so no actual dodging is involved. Nemesis however, which is one of Quote’s guns, has a bit more fair case as it is stated to shoot “Lighting of the Goddess”, you could take it as a flowery language as there are clearly no gods in Cave Story but visual is seemingly supportive to the statement as we see the gun shooting Lighting bolts. But most importantly of all is Ballos’ lighting in his boss fight, unlike High Press’ lighting, his lighting is shot a lot less predictably and actually moves a few frames before touching the ground, meaning Quote actually is dodging it. While there are no statements, it visually matches ideally and is pretty clearly intended as lighting, from movement to sound, so it should be ultimately fine. But there is also a bigger topic to address, that being:
Is the Spur a laser?
This may seem more questionable but a further higher argument for Cave Story speed can be gained from Quote’s upgraded version of Polar Star - Spur. As mentioned earlier at further upgrade, the longer it charges the larger beams it shoots, beams which other characters can dodge, as shown with Ma Pignon. But is there enough evidence to take it as a laser? Our overall answer would be - yes, for several reasons. Mechanically it basically functions like one, as it shoots straight beams and doesn’t show any signs of force. On top of that all, the game’s japanese text (which generally should be a safe priority given Pixel - Daisuke Amaya is originally a japanese developer) also refers to The Spur as laser:
(text taken from game’s code/script)
This is referring specifically to Quote’s inventory which has description for all of his items and guns, specifically kanji “レーザー” translates to Katakana for Laser. With this statement in mind and visually Spur not containing any major visual contradictions we believe it’s fair case for it to be an actual laser and therefore, due to plenty of enemies moving in-tandem with it, for cast to have Relativistic reactions and combat speeds.
Island size?
(wtf is all that…)
Alright let’s break this down. One of the biggest plot points in Cave Story as well as probably the biggest power related feat for Quote and other characters to scale to is scaling to Core. Core is this big plant looking living creature, which Quote fights twice throughout the game, first time normally and second time possessed by Red Crystal Doctor (and therefore may be amplified due to how Red Flowers and Red Crystal work).
The Core is basically what was keeping the island afloat for years (dozens of years even), which not only is implied by The Doctor and Misery panicking once Quote was killing it for the first time, but also The Island where Cave Story events were happening, was shown and stated to be collapsing once Quote actually destroyed Core. Now scaling characters to it seems to be fairly simple, Quote not only defeated Core twice, not only the second time Core likely was heavily amplified, but also right after destroying the amplified Core, Quote defeated Ballos a few minutes later, who at bare least by the virtue of being the last and hardest boss in the entire game should be superior to everything (and at most is basically considered one of the main causes of all magical events, Core included). Case in point, scaling Quote to what basically is keeping island afloat is overall substantial, and the feat in question is not impossible to calculate, all we practically need to figure out is how much the whole island weighs, and from here we can use potential energy which goes by a basic formula PE = mgh, where m is mass, g is acceleration due to gravity and h is height of the object above the ground.
So first things first, acceleration is easy, even school students who have been in physics class know that on our planet it is 9.8 m/s^2. The height itself is also not extremely hard to point out, we very clearly see the island to be among clouds, and even straight up above both mountains and clouds on the final screen, so we can use cloud heights for reference of the ends we can use. And now to figure out the mass, all we do is use a density of a stone, such as granite or basalt for one half and density of iron for the other half (given Cave Story 3D showcases all lower halves of the island to be mainly metallic) and multiply it with the volume of the island…which is…which…is…which…is…uhhhhh…
Oh boy this is where our research has stumbled the most. In all possible ways. You see, Cave Story is a game that is made by only one guy for fun, and obviously because of being like that there is really no additional material that actually gives details about lore, no databooks, no guidebooks, no nothing. Again, that is to be expected because the game was made for free by a single guy, it is because of that it may be so inspirational as an indie game. Point being, there are really no official statements when it comes to how big the island is, or hell, we don’t even have an official statement when it comes to the placement of a variety of locations in the island. The only thing that we can point out is that plenty of places that we do visit are somewhat interconnected with each other, but some seem to be rather much farther away. After all, Quote and Misery were practically constantly teleporting across the island, which besides because of the story mostly happening in…you know, a cave (who would’ve thought), it is likely that the distance between all of the not connected locations could generally just be incredibly long. Case in point, whatever method you would try to measure the island, given that there is quite literally no reference points, the island could be so big that it may have dozens of unexplored maps or in opposite, small enough to contain all maps that are there in the game (and it doesn’t help that in the ending where we see the island, despite seeing it falling there are no legitimate reference points to actually pixel scale it, not even objects within the island as it is so much sized down we can’t even precisely assume where is what exactly). There’s no real way to know for sure due to how the game is structured. For the sake of being fair to the feat and considering that it is straight up named as an Island, we are gonna generalise it into 3 ends.
Using this Wikipedia list of islands we can see plenty of islands with the surface area from thousands to tens of thousands kilometers so to be utmost fair, we went from 2500 to 10000 square kilometers. With that in mind, all 3 ends of calculation reach to Teratons range (From 2.9 Teratons of TNT and up to 23.22 Teratons of TNT), or Country Level. A noticeably good upgrade for a feat and probably is a way to go for now, given there are generally no other approaches that would be as direct as of right now.

And we’re back! And with a surprise, too. Volnutt vs. Quote isn’t exactly the most popular matchup, but I’d definitely say it’s my preference for both.
Cave Story is a game I really enjoy - the music, the gameplay, the story, all adds up to one of my favorite Metroidvanias. Plus is even better in some regards.
3D doesn’t exist.
Anyways, I really like it and Quote, and Volnutt is also a character I really like. His games are really fun and charming, and he’s a really endearing protagonist. And I think this matchup matches the strengths of both - showing off their arsenals on top of letting you use a familiar cave setting for both, and letting you do a lot of fun stuff as a result. I think it’s a pretty much perfect vibe, and I’d say for the main Mega Men (besides Zero, if you count him) this is safely my favorite matchup for any of them.
As for who wins? Well… let’s start with non stats stuff.
In terms of mobility and range with just their own games, Quote I’d say generally is a fair bit more mobile. Jetpack happens to do that to you, but external media like the manhua turns that towards Volnutt. Skill is similar, really.
CQC is pretty obviously a Volnutt advantage; Quote’s only real CQC weapon is King’s Blade and even that’s not much compared to Volnutt’s own swords or his drill.
In terms of raw arsenal, Quote does have a pretty notable edge in that besides the missile launcher, none of his stuff is super reliant on ammo, and at most just needs a couple of seconds to reload. Volnutt on the other hand has to reload and has a limited supply of ammunition, and this is notable especially given the aforementioned mobility advantage.
…However, those are the main things going for Quote. Things do not begin to look great for him after this.
First of all, resistances. Volnutt has elemental resistances, so Fireball and Bubbline are just completely negated. On top of that, damage is a much bigger deal for Quote than for Volnutt, for several reasons.
First of all, Quote only has one healing item, while Volnutt has several, and Data lets him recover basically unlimited. But, there’s a bigger problem - any hit Quote takes makes him lose Weapon EXP, so for weapons besides Nemesis and the Spur, Quote would be having them weakened by every single hit he takes from Volnutt.
Volnutt also just can like, turn invulnerable or invisible, and there’s not much Quote can do about that.
So, with stats relative, Quote has a fair few edges but Volnutt just will always win a war of attrition, making it mid-high diff. So, do things change when we take stats into account?
…Yeah, no, they become much worse for Quote.
In terms of raw stats, Quote should scale to the Core being able to hold up the Floating Island. This would lend an energy of, at the highest, 23.22 teratons of TNT. Very impressive. In terms of speed, he would get relativistic speeds from scaling to Ballos and Ma Pignon dodging the Spur’s shots, which are lasers.
Okay, not too bad.
Anyways, Volnutt beat up Sera, who tosses black holes at you.
Yeah. This gets 0.075 FOE.
For reference, 23.22 teratons would be 2.322e+13 tons of TNT. 0.075 FOE would be 1.793e+33 tons of TNT. That is 20 more zeroes than Quote’s number. That is an insurmountable power gap, especially since Quote has zero methods of negating durability.
In terms of speed, Volnutt also clears. 17c vs. .4c, making him over 40 times faster than Quote at his best.
So, yeah. Volnutt grossly outstats Quote to a degree Quote really cannot do anything to him. Yeah…
So, in the end, while the soldier from the surface had greater mobility, excellent skill, and unlimited resources, the Digger’s incredible strength, blitzing speeds, sheer versatility, healing abilities, and superior endurance made sure Quote’s cave story would become a mere legend.
The winner is Mega Man Volnutt.
Oleggator
Why hello there, haven’t seen me for a while have you? Now, back in Hat Kid vs Umbrella blog (shameless shill I know…) I was saying that there are plenty of other blogs I want to contribute to, with that in mind I’m proud to say that this is the first (and a bit far from the last) one I’m happy to be in, I really like Cave Story and giving it some complimentary research is a pretty tough task, as I myself also was generally going across probably all 3 of its versions (og, plus and 3D). And on top of that, verse barely had calcs and/or documented feats (especially this darn island feat I swear to god…), so I’m glad to make essentially a definitive blog for our good ol robot indie game shaper.
Now, on to the topic of the debate. To be fair, there are a good share of factors to consider, so let me rundown from something simple: Arsenal. Arsenal is generally straightforward on both ends, but there are some pros and cons on both sides. Volnutt from starters is a better at close range with his lightsaber like blade or drill hand, King’s Blade is cool but Quote mainly throws it, so you can’t count it too much as a skill for close range, plus Volnutt does have elemental resistances which do render some of Quote’s weapons as not really helpful, particularly Fireball and Nemesis. Plus he has a few more additional items than Quote, such as more healing options compared to Quote’s just one (very helpful but one nevertheless), and even invulnerability options that help him tank Quote’s weapons more frequently. This doesn’t mean Quote is out of options however, for one his Air tank has shown to block any missile in a Curly boss fight, this alone already can block off any of Volnutt’s missiles, on top of that, generally with their arsenal in mind, Quote manages to cover quite a good amount of range and AOE. Bubbline, King’s Blade and Whimsical Stars particularly are just insanely good at covering as much area as possible, and Quote is fairly willing to utilize that to his advantage, and on top of that while Volnutt can recover his weapon energy Volnutt still ultimately is reliant on capacity of his ammo, while Quote doesn’t really have much problem with that on his end, as most of his weapons already have unlimited ammunition. All in all Volnutt should take this category off of quantity, but Quote’s quality of his weaponry definitely makes it closer.
Which can be said not as much when it comes to another factor: Skills. Now, Volnutt is probably more experienced at bare least off of the fact that he ultimately has more than one game, but Cave Story is literally Cave Story, ok let me rephrase, not to say that Megaman Legends is some easy game series that every toddler would beat, it’s just Cave Story at its hardest is…much harder. In a sense that with very little amount of HP Quote often has to fight off foes not only larger than himself, but also who just spam and shoot dozens of projectiles at once, essentially causing danmaku with that amount of enemies and projectiles, with each being practically deadly, and Quote is skilled enough to basically avoid all of them, especially with a little help from Booster v2.0 in mobility. Sure Volnutt can technically replicate something like that in the manhua and he has experienced foes who are similarly mobile, but on the other hand not much in Volnutt’s arsenal is really something new for Quote, and plenty of them Quote is just a lot more skilled and mobile to dodge and avoid while keeping Volnutt in check with plenty of his weapons. Quote should practically have this category with a solid amount of edge simply due to the sheer difficulty of Cave Story.
At that point normally the debate would be whether Volnutt’s arsenal is enough to keep Quote down or is Quote skilled (and mobile) enough to turn things around, but as usual one last factor is basically what determines the whole verdict so let’s get to it: Stats. Now thankfully Quote ain’t that chopped with feats, not only he dodged lighting and scales to enemies being able to dodge his laser, but also scaling to The Core itself practically makes him 3-23 Teratons of TNT levels of power, that is a lot being frank, especially for a single game, but is it enough to beat Volnutt? Well, you probably can already get off of feats and scaling, sadly Volnutt is just quite much on a whole another league. Even with his own feats he already gets Faster than light, which should make him blitz Quote, and on top of that scaling to Megaman of Juno gets him practically Hundreds of Teratons, which is much stronger than Quote’s Core scaling. Sure you can argue a pretty large upscaling for Quote here, as not only he defeated an amplified version of The Core, but also defeated Ballos who after the time of creation of The Core became much powerful, at least according to in-game statements, but neither it is the limit for Volnutt as he also defeated Sera who was able to generate a Black Hole. I repeat, a Black Hole, pretty self-explanatory on top of other feats getting just severely bigger than anything that is possible to be argued for Quote, giving Volnutt a very significant edge in this category.
All in all while Quote certainly could at least keep up with Volnutt’s quantity of the arsenal, feat wise he just was not strong or fast enough to get an actual advantage from that. Quote was essentially a Cave Legend, but in the full picture of things Volnutt is the one to keep his Story going. The winner is Mega Man Volnutt! See ya later in some other projects I’ve got myself into…
Mikha’el
Da-daaaaaaaaaaan~! Wow, it’s been ages since I’ve partaken in a blog with personal verdicts like this. It feels rather nostalgic to do this especially since G1 blogs used to do this. In any case, I want to thank door for having me here partake in this wonderful blog. Most of the work had been done beforehand, buuut that don’t mean everything was easy to do and there was still a lot to talk about regarding the Digger.
Without further ado, my verdict on Volnutt vs. Quote. … Well, one last digression, actually: this MU is peak. My preferred MU for Volnutt atp even if he has other solid options. And having played Cave Story, I can say I am invested in both sides. Pls make Legends 3, Capcom ;-;
ANYWAYS, NOW on to the verdict. I think it’d be best to go the reverse like Door and Oleggator did with discussing tertiaries, secondaries and primaries.
So, I guess I should say that Volnutt is probably smarter than Quote given that while the latter definitely isn’t average in terms of intelligence if he could pull off everything he’s done, the former built Data, the little monkey robot that restores energy like it’s nothing, can manipulate data and can store his memories. So that’s neat. Skill and experience are a bit of nebulous comparisons to accurately determine given the absurdness of the projectile game Quote has had to deal with over the course of his adventures in gameplay. This is certainly helpful for him to deal with Volnutt’s borderline Danmaku mine spam which he can use. That being said, Volnutt just has better close quarters showings especially if you use the manhua. So it’s a matter of Quote being better at long range and Volnutt being better at short range, both of which they have experience dealing with. So I’d say they’re both equal here.
Arsenal, I might lean to Quote. Though it should be worth mentioning that while Volnutt is dependent on weapon energy for his special weapons, he still technically has a lot of options for his regular Buster with his many parts and he can always re-stock his energy as many times as he needs with Data. But ultimately, not relying on weapon energy is better than relying on it. And with Quote’s Air Tank, he can deal with missile-based weapons which a good chunk of Volnutt’s arsenal consists of. So he’s definitely got a decently equipped arsenal to deal with a good chunk of options. And yes, Volnutt can have a huge numbers advantage with Eden, it is too dependent on the battlefield where the battle takes place because it’s either usable and Quote gets overwhelmed, or it’s straight up unusable.
And lastly items, which… I mean, Volnutt can make himself invisible and invulnerable with them, and even make himself invulnerable to elemental attacks. Unless the opponent has hax around these, these are valuable advantages to have which Quote doesn’t really have an answer to. He also has far better healing options. But on the other hand, Quote also has better mobility since one can fly, the other one can’t. That’s also another valuable advantage to have in a match like this since it makes it harder to hit the person that can fly.
This comes down to if Quote can just outlast Volnutt’s better items and abilities or if Volnutt can get in close to finish the job. And for that, Stats will have to get looked at. Which…
Yeah, no use for suspense atp in the blog. Volnutt is faster than light (by around 17 times), Quote is not. And the technology of Legends (which Volnutt scales to) operates on a different greater scale to that of Cave Story. Remember that refractors can withstand being used as fuses for machines meant to stop volcanoes from single-handedly causing century long ice ages and mere Servitor Units can hijack vehicles that can break these refractors. Mother Units like Sera can sustain the moon-sized Elysuim and can even create black holes. All of which are feats far above sustaining an island in the air in scale. So, yeah. Volnutt easily takes stats, thus allowing him to capitalize on his advantages to take Quote out.
Quote has certainly proven to be a formidable challenge with his skill, better mobility, more reliable arsenal and remarkable experience, but Volnutt’s overwhelming strength, superluminal speed, greater versatility, better endurance and simply greater items allows the Digger to win this match!
The Legend dug another victory - and lived to tell their story!
The winner is Mega Man Trigger/Volnutt!
Final Tally
Volnutt (3) - door-kun, Oleggator, Mikha’el
Quote (0) - Still the GOAT though
Afterword
So, that was fun! This was originally meant to be next after Nagisa vs. Tokaku, but that project got stalled due to… a lot of reasons, mainly the people on it just getting busy and me having other things I wanted to prioritize. It will come out eventually, it’s just… not my priority right now, nor is it the priority of my blog at the moment. As for what is the priority! Well, that would be this next time! See you there.
